Another online poker success story has been reported. This time in the UK, namely Belfast, Northern Ireland where soon to be married Lee-Anne Smyth is revelling in her success at online poker games. She may not have the same press friendly name as someone like Chris Moneymaker, and has not won a major league tournament, but 25 year old Smyth is now earning a very good living from playing online poker.
Smyth is a maths graduate, who decided not to take a £40,000 a year banking job, instead choosing to survive on her skill at poker. She now plays poker online at the Ladbrokes site every week, earning on average a weekly income of £4,500. Should her success continue she is on target to have earned £243,000 by the end of the year.
Talking to a newspaper Smyth believes that her maths degree may have played some part in preparing her for the challenges of online poker, saying “hours pent solving algebraic equations sharpened my poker brain”. She also talked about her decision to not take a position in banking, and her lack of intention to join the workforce any time soon saying “Who needs a proper job when I can make what most people earn in a month in a couple of hours?”
Her poker success has enabled Lee-Ann to buy a £150, 000 house outright, and buy a £15,000 car for cash. She is set to get married soon in surely the most suitable of places, Las Vegas.
